RIP, Windows 7: Microsoft ending updates and security support for popular operating system –

RIP, Windows 7: Microsoft ending updates and security support for popular operating system – | GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY TODAY | Scoop.it
One year ago, Microsoft began the doomsday countdown for Windows 7, promising to end support for the stubbornly popular operating system. Today, that clock hit zero, leaving millions of Windows 7 holdouts vulnerable to future security risks.

End of support doesn’t mean Windows 7 will suddenly disappear. But Microsoft will no longer ship security or quality updates for the operating system, nor will it provide technical support.

Businesses and educators using Windows 7 can get additional security updates, but it will cost them. Microsoft is charging $25 per machine for these updates, and that cost will double several times over the next few years.
Al Cannistra's insight:

the end was inevitable - farewell Windows 7 (but it is NOT disappearing)

Benefits beyond physics
Building the EIC will maintain U.S. leadership in nuclear physics and accelerator science—fields that are crucial to our technological, economic, and national security—and train the next generation of experts in these fields. In addition, the technological advances already under development to make the EIC a reality—e.g., innovative accelerator, particle tracking, and data-management components—could have widespread impact on new approaches to cancer therapy, solving other “big data” challenges, and improving accelerator facilities for testing batteries, catalysts, and other energy-related materials.
